James Richardson

Every now and then I quote from this poet, whose 2005 book, "Vectors" is a frequent-flyer on my desk. Here's aphorism #164: "I say I have no self-knowledge, but I know which things I will never tell you." If THAT's not moon in Cancer, I don't know what is. (Ausablepress.com)

Stars

I know it's the Oscars tonight but I'm totally unmotivated. Last night Zoe and I went to STARS ON ICE, which was, as anticipated, sublime. Totally recommended, and the pairs skaters keep ratcheting the bar upward. Sale/Pelletier, Ina/Zimmerman were doing acrobatic maneuvers on the ice you wouldn't think cartoon characters could do, let alone real people. Scott Hamilton, the founder of this extravaganza is an early Virgo and one suspects he keeps really close tabs on the company's performance every season so that everyone is doing a superb job. I've seen Stars pretty much every year since 1999 and I have never seen a show in which everyone wasn't completely adrenalized and motivated to do well.

I need this!!!!!

total materialistic luxury lusting. I have used a black leather backpack for years and the current one has silk flowers tied to the zipper togs so I can tell if the zipper is open. And Vera Bradley has these really enticing psychedelic patterns that appeal to the latent secret preppie within. $94!!! includes shipping. I CANNOT justify this!!! wretched moon in taurus ignites this stuff, frankly.

keeping it real

I am behind on my American Idol watching -- even w/knock-off Tivo, 5 hours doesn't condense to 15 minutes. Which I enjoy for a variety of reasons, first and foremost among them being Simon Cowell's perfection at showing the TRUE nature of Libra. The sly integrity, the occasional daffyness, the laser-sword slash and the blithe dismissal. You might think he'd probably need to be the M in an off-camera S&M relationship, but I suspect he'd be bored by it all. A man whom Hogarth would have been delighted to etch -- so many fascinating vices and virtues encapsulated at once.

I just looked up Randy and Paula's birthdays and -- no wonder it's so beezar -- he's a very early Cancer and she's a very late Gemini, so she gets the empathetic influence, while he gets to be a deeply curious Gem.

I also really love the music-biz slang. I used to get regular doses of that when my brother was off supporting rock stars and there's NO slang like studio and road-slang. Though one suspects Randy is just making some of this up on the spot (an air sign influence), to be sure.

I always hold off looking up the birthdays of the front-runners but it's pretty hilarious that Taylor's birthday was within a day or so of Simon's, who never quite got the fact that his huckster country boy act was SUPPOSED to be an act, which is part of the fun of it in this country. I am reminded back in '80?? '81?? when my dear old friend Milo Miles interviewed Johnny Rotten Now Lydon (which is what we seemed to say when PiL started) and the one moment Johny let down his guard was talking about how much he would love to meet Dolly Parton. I'm sure he has by now.

Mercury Regretrograde

I just had my class in "lunar rhythms and natal horoscopes" at Fitchburg Art Museum with some extremely bright and lively folks -- no discernable pattern with the sun signs -- BUT some similar looking charts. And I got to thinking about patterns and Mercury retrograde and how impossible it is to anticipate the way communication can melt down during this period. Here are some things that go missing: keys

important papers

directions

signs that used to be on the road and moved somewhere. But where?

emails

not getting all my email is a chronic CHRONIC problem

During the last Mercury retrograde my PC, so faithful, so reliable, so survivably spam-ridden went belly-up and this Mac is just

"not my favorite"

as Baby Dai would say.

This is typical. I've been thinking about Mercury Rx. stuff all day -- including the fact that our Great Allies in Iraq, at this point the UK and Lithuania -- will be withdrawing in the summer. And I am skeptical because grand declarations made during Mercury Rx have a way of GOING away when it's over.

Got any good Mercury Rx stories? Send 'em here. Let's just hope they arrive....

habits...

An online friend who's a gemini recently stopped smoking so I provided the days in next fortnight that she would be extra-annoyed. I want credit for the term "astrological stresstimate"

Hey, it's the new moon -- not to mention Fat Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and the Lenten wait. Having grown up as an Episcopagan, we didn't do a lot of the more observational practices but had my Armenian grandparents settled somewhere where there were Armenians, I probably would have grown up in a charmingly picturesque gender-divided orthodox church. I love the chanting, I really do, and play music from that part of the world a lot but it definitely does something unhinging to my subconscious. Which I really need to stay submerged. What are YOU giving up for Lent?

birthday sun/moon

Hi Sally, I have a question about my sun (Pisces) and moon (Aries). It looks to me like they're going to be in almost exactly the same alignment on my birthday (Feb 20) as they were the year I was born - I haven't noticed this before.  How often does this happen? Is there anything to be aware of or look for in my day/year/ life pattern w/ this configuration coming around again?

Thanks for any info/insight you can give -

Christa

Hi Christa,

One theory about sun/moon angles coming around again (whether it's natal sun/natal moon or transiting sun/transiting moon) for women is that it's thought to indicate monthly highpoint for fertility. As a (cuspy) sun Pisces with Aries moon, you're someone who's perennially "cautiously optimistic," so my take on this is that you should completely indulge yourself on your birthday and go completely wild with whatever fun you can have. Especially since it's Mercury retrograde and misunderstandings are rife and more likely. (Also, more likely for ME since I'm finishing a Mars opposition Mars/Mars conjunction Saturn this week. And about time! Hi Carly!!). Thanks for writing and happy birthday

mercury retrograde -- out to lunch....and dinner....

Oh the sorrow. Oh the agony of being a florist/fancy restaurant on the day Mercury retrogrades AND there's a long-awaited snowstorm. I don't know about you but the lack of snow and warm weather pre-February makes me feel very distracted as to time when it DOES snow. The last time it did my first thought was -- KeeRIST, I am NOT READY for Christmas!

Can you find this site?

Readers: I've been emailing the web people at Phoenix to see whether we can't make Moon Signs as easy to find as it has been. I've also been visiting alt-weekly sites to see who's making a site that's easy to navigate. Yeah, completely crazy thing to do during Mercury retrograde, but there you go. So, my ? is: What's your favorite newspaper website -- is there a website you think is well-designed and easy to navigate? I'd love to visit if possible. .
