Report: ManRay seeks Blockbuster video space in Central Square, with restaurant. Here are a few menu suggestions.
Those looking forward to the ManRay reunion February 1 at Brighton Music Hall have a new reason to celebrate: Cambridge Day reported last night that the legendary Cambridge nightclub could be resurrected at the vacant Blockbuster lot at 541 Massachusetts Avenue.
ManRay owner Don Holland recently met with the Cambridge Licensing Commission and detailed plans to eventually re-open the dance club with a concert hall set-up, a VIP area, and best of all, a restaurant. According to Cambridge Day, "Man Ray’s license is for 635 standing people and an additional 115 seated," but the new space would hold significantly less than that. From the same report:
Holland said he would bring “basically the same operation” to the site, creating anew the home for the goth, fetish, LGBT and BDSM scenes that were dispersed to nights at clubs such as T.T.’s since Man Ray’s closing in July 2005, forced out by a landlord who wanted to replace the club with apartments. It would also bring another stage to Central Square, with a booking sensibility that once brought in Nirvana and Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy as performers.
Of course, we've heard these rumors before (I once chased down the Green Street Grill rumor a few years ago when I was at the Boston Herald), and even the published report suggests this is posturing so Holland retains his license.
Regardless, this is great news for the underground community. So with this whole notion of a restaurant being included -- just like all venues and clubs in Cambridge -- we wanted to suggest a few menu items that would no doubt do well with the ManRay crowd. In addition to the KMFGM, Front of House 242, and Front Line Cook Assembly, some dishes could be:
Depeche A La Mode
Black Tape For A Cordon Bleu Girl
Nitzer Egg
Meat Beet Manifesto
Wumpscuttlefish
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kelp
Leather Chicken Strips
Einstürzende Neubraten
De/Venison
Hammstein
(...all dishes served with a side of Virgin Prunes and Spahn Ranch dressing)
