[tuesday in cambridge] Maven's Choice @ Red Star Union with Fat Creeps, Bearstronaut and Mellow Bravo #bostonmusicawards
This year's BOSTON MUSIC AWARDS don't crash the Liberty Hotel until Dec. 2, but producer JAKE BRENNAN has organized a string of pre-parties at Red Star Union in Cambridge leading up to the big night. Last week, a handful of nominees (RIBS, Sarah Blacker, Moe Pope, Spirit Kid, and Caleb Groh) got together in the intimate Kendall Square space and played mini-sets. This week, shit gets even realer, as tomorrow night becomes Maven's Choice, where three journalists select one act they'd like to promote as their Artist of the Year.
>> Jed Gottlieb of the Boston Herald has selected rock and roll powderkeg MELLOW BRAVO.
>> Luke O'Neil of Put That Shit On The List and the Globe has picked dance-pop quartet BEARSTRONAUT.
>> And I, of the Phoenix and WFNX, have tabbed surfs-down garage rock trio FAT CREEPS.
My smitten-ship with these lo-fi Creeps goes back to around New Year's, when Mick Murray of In Your Face photo tipped me off to the trio on the strength of their debut single, "Nancy Drew," and their quirky-ass live show, where guitarist/bassists/vocalists Mariam and Gracie would wear space helmets and spandex and other crazy shit on stage. But "Nancy Drew" was a dope jam, very subtle and sweet, and I was instantly hooked.
I ended up making an appearance in their music video for "Cherry," in which I get slapped upside the head for macking on some two-legged pizza (video is posted after the Bandcamp jump), and their standout track "Leave Her Alone," off their August self-titled EP, was a fixture on my WFNX shows.
Red Star Union is tiny as heck, so be sure to RSVP here and arrive in time for the 8pm doors. Word is all this will be recorded and show on both the internet and OnDemand. Hell yeah television!
If you can't make it Tuesday night, the whole thing will be livestreamed here.
See you in the pit.
