The chocolate mousse included in the prix fixe meal is a generous portion, dark and creamy. Other desserts include fresh fruit with crème anglaise, crème brulée spooned into a pastry shell, a chocolate lava cake, and bread pudding. Harold was drawn to the pudding, and he shared the reward: three scoops with three scoops of whipped cream. This version featured large bread cubes soaked in milk and butter, but not surrounded by any “pudding,” per se. Although a different incarnation, it was delicious nonetheless.
Lucce is located in the West Shore Road house formerly occupied by Nonna Cherubina. Much of the Old Country décor remains, but with a contemporary twist. Some of the prints are Italian (and Greek) ruins, but others are caricatured close-ups of classical statues. And above our heads, more full-bodied classical motifs romped across the ceiling.
The wine list leans toward Italian and California offerings, with our party especially enjoying a Stonestreet cabernet sauvignon. There is also a full bar in what was once a third dining room. With a name like Lucce (“light”) for good luck, and with the careful and creative cooking we encountered, this new eatery is well on its way to success.
