In the Phoenix: Wes Anderson's Rhode Island
Call it a Rhode Island-size blockbuster.
Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom - though it won't gross Batman-like returns - continues to blow up the indie circuit. And the film's success here - Kathy Staab of the Jane Pickens Theater in Newport tells me it's her highest-grossing movie in memory - owes something to a local tie: it was filmed in Rhode Island.
As best we could tell, no one had properly mapped the Rhody spots in the movie. Thus, my little feature in this week's Phoenix: a tour of (some) of the Ocean State treasures that Anderson turned into his fictional New England island of New Penzance. The online version comes with Bill Murray's amusing tour of the Moonrise Kingdom set.
The piece is part of a larger mid-summer guide: chock full o' ideas for what to do before Labor Day rolls around. But we've got our usual features, too, including our This Just In page: I've got a story on a striking new downtown mural, up alongside Shepard Fairey's ode to post-industrial Providence. And contributor Phil Eil pens a very amusing look at a miniature horse competition in Foster this past weekend.
Take it to the beach!
