Poster Boy makes a case for not mixing politics with movies. Also for not indulging in extended flashbacks. It starts at the end as Henry (Tom Brady look-alike Matt Newton), the formerly closeted gay son of GOP senator Jack Kray (Michael Lerner — Henry must have been adopted), tells all to a reporter. Cut to six months previous, when the senator bullies Henry into giving him an introductory speech at Henry’s college. A North Carolina senator running for re-election at a New York campus? Not exactly from the Karl Rove playbook. Director Zak Tucker also bends the rules when he inserts into Henry’s flashbacks the flashbacks of other characters, such as Anthony (Jack Noseworthy), a gay activist who meets Henry at a frat party, learns the identity of his one-night stand, and . . . no surprises here. Newton brings charm to his stereotype but not to his speeches. The film is a poster boy for what’s wrong with gay cinema today.
