Portland scene report: January 18, 2008

Sibilance starts now
By PORTLAND PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  January 18, 2008

Word has finally come in that RUSTIC OVERTONES’ deal with VELOUR MUSIC GROUP is official. The band will release their Light at the End to a national audience March 18, with the hidden track, “Happy,” becoming un-hidden. To quote the press release, “Rustic Overtones are back, this time to stay.”

Big Best Music Poll winners CAMBIATA have got some new music for you. The band release their new EP, To Heal, with a show at the Station February 2, joined by the KILLING MOON, KID:NAP:KIN, the BRITISH INCLINE, and ALIAS GRACE, with discs in stores February 5. Look for a review by Pfeifle in a couple weeks.

Did you get one of the 100 limited edition copies of BRYAN OUELLETTE’s How to Move inPlace? Released January 1, the discs covers all combine to make up one giant art piece, though it’s unclear when people might meet up to piece them together. Ouellette’s a singer/songwriter with a breathy tenor, mostly backed just by his own guitar and some subtle bass.

Singer/songwriter JON CALL, formerly known as JONATHAN CALL, releases his second full-length disc, The Playtime Music Session, with a gig at One Longfellow Square, February 23. Mostly, you’re going to find vocals, guitar, and harmonica. Or, to quote: “His personable lyrics speak of hope, love, and the world in which we live, provoking the listener to open their mind and become more conscious of the way we are and the way we treat each other.” See, us “Sibilance” staffers treat people so poorly that we can't help point out that the plural possessive pronoun “their” simply does not agree with its singular antecedent, “listener.”
