Trent Reznor circa 1995.
There was plenty of drama to be had as Trent Reznor flirted with his Floridian protégé Marilyn Manson when their bands joined forces at the BCA. But given Manson’s decline, the excitement of that show didn’t compare to a certain electricity that was in the air after David Bowie not only befriended Reznor and put his stamp of approval on NIN, but then essentially agreed to be the second in command on what was billed as a co-headlining tour with Nine Inch Nails. That one night at the Tweeter Center was important in that it brought a certain sense of legitimacy to what was becoming the new classic rock (“Head Like A Hole” is more than just a future classic now: it’s a classic). It also served as a reminded that, whatever the name, there’s always been alternative rock of some sort, and Bowie was again out there on that cutting edge.
