Review: The Forgiveness of Blood

Joshua Marston's thoughtful, subtle feature

American filmmaker Joshua Marston (Maria Full of Grace) traveled to Albania to write and direct this thoughtful, subtle feature about the victims of a blood feud, with an all-Albanian ensemble. The owner of a bread truck kills his neighbor and flees into hiding, leaving his middle-class family at home to suffer. His children can't leave their house in fear of being murdered in retaliation, so innocent school days are replaced by endless TV watching and depression. Credit director Marston for a persuasive look at Albanian culture, and for keeping his tense story from trailing off into bloody melodrama.

Much of the first half of Charles Evans Jr.'s muckraking documentary is annoyingly gimmicky, relying on unneeded graphics, animation, and imitation-Errol-Morris effects to tell the tale of a Philip Morris scientist, Victor DeNoble, who became a key government witness against his old employer.
