Review: Saw VII 3D

Going out with a whimper

The alleged final installment in the death-game series goes out with a whimper — and the 3D visuals, apart from a few screen-popping squirts of blood, do little to accentuate the gore. The writers and director Kevin Greutert, who takes a hack at his second Saw, content themselves with just getting it done: random vignettes like two buddies in a saw fight over a manipulative bimbo and a quintet of neo-Nazis strapped to a lethally rigged El Camino have little to do with the blood feud between Jigsaw's widow (Betsy Russell) and Hoffman (Costas Mandylor), the righteous serial killer's protégé gone rogue. The nifty twist is Sean Patrick Flanery as a Jigsaw survivor who's spun his ordeal into green with a book and a media blitz. As for Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), who flickered out in Episode III, he still lingers in every frame. Although that was smartly done in IV and V, it now has all the freshness of a hacked-off body part from Saw I.
