Last week I discussed a trio of new drone and improv releases by local artists, but there’s a bounty of homegrown beat-based recordings due out this spring as well. Here’s a rundown of a few local releases that will put a bit of bounce in your step.

Those looking for a little synthesized bliss should check out the debut 12-inch by ANDRÉ OBIN (best known as the bass-playing half of MATTERS AND DUNAWAY) on the Moodgadget label. Titled Colorwheel, it’s a lush, heartstring-tugging record that’s cut from the same emotive cloth as the Field’s much lauded Things Keep Falling Down (Kompakt). Also, keep your ears peeled next month for the second release of 2008 on Boston’s own Zer0 G Sounds. “First Corner” is the first single by ESQUINA, the duo of label head EDDIE O. and BALAZS BOGNAR (a/k/a LATE SEASON), and it’s a deep, seductive bit of aquatic techno.

If you prefer the earthy to the æthereal, there’s a pair of new releases from labels whose roots in Boston run deep, even if they’re based far and away. Dutty Artz is a new multimedia label run by Massachusetts native and DJ extraordinaire JACE CLAYTON (a/k/a DJ /RUPTURE) in partnership with New York dubstep producer MATT SHADETEK. Their inaugural release is Dutty Remix Zero EP, a scorching split 12-inch by Shadetek and Barcelona’s CAUTO with four gritty, dubstep-infused tracks.

JAKE TRUSSELL (a/k/a DJ C), one of /Rupture’s compatriots from his days in the influential late-’90s artcore jungle collective Toneburst, has a new full-length release called Gods and Robots that features the warmly thunderous ragga’d vocals of Zulu. Released on his own Mashit label, it includes remixes by the likes of Montreal remixmaster GHISLAIN POIRIER and fellow Windy City resident CHRISSY MURDERBOT, and it’s available at Mashit’s super-handy download shop.
